Post-Thanksgiving Work 11/30/23

1. Idiom of the Day:
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

In order to understand this saying, let's paraphrase it first. This means we will simply say this exact sentence using different words. We will not add our own meaning to it! How else can you say the above idiom?

My paraphrase: _________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Next, think about what the figurative meaning of this idiom is. This means we are thinking beyond what the words say, and we are attaching meaning to it! We are now making an inference!

My inference: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Greek and Latin Roots
Today's root is aqua-              It has a Latin origin.                Its meaning is water.         Some examples are: aquarium,
                                                                                                                                                 aquamarine
Sentence Examples:
  • The aquarium contained lots of fish and sea life found in the ocean.
  • March's birthstone is aquamarine; it is the color of water!

3. Cause and Effect
Directions: Please provide a possible effect for each cause shown below.

a. Jimi just received his paycheck and headed to the mall.
effect:_________________________________________________________________________________________________
b. Lydia practiced piano until her fingers hurt. Her concert was scheduled for the following day!
effect:_________________________________________________________________________________________________

Can YOU provide the cause this time? This means what you write would have to have happened BEFORE the effect!

c. cause: _______________________________________________________________________________________________
effect: Sima realized he had to buy a new uniform right away.

d. cause: _______________________________________________________________________________________________
effect: This made Lina's vacation much better than she had ever imagined.

4. Q & A
Directions: When you create a question for which the answer will make sense, be sure to phrase it correctly!

Answer: It is something each one of you can and will accomplish!
Question: ______________________________________________________________________________________________

5.  Fact or Opinion
Directions:
Decide whether each statement is a fact (can be proved) or an opinion (someone's point of view!).

a. Fact     Opinion     That man on stage is the greatest singer in the world.
b. Fact     Opinion     Cindi should run for president because she is such a good leader.
c. Fact     Opinion
Our president is currently Joe Biden.
d. Fact     Opinion     Shari is the best friend you could have!
e. Fact     Opinion     Many dogs are intelligent creatures who can be taught to make inferences.
f. Fact     Opinion     Silver is a precious metal found naturally on earth.

6. Literary Term
Metaphor
Definition
: A metaphor is a direct comparison between two things that do not seem to have anything in common at first glance. But, as we do with all figurative language, we have to look closely to see which characteristic of one thing is being compared to a characteristic of the other!

NOTE: A metaphor does NOT use like or as within this comparison (as a simile does). A metaphor says something IS something else!

Metaphor example: I saw Javier swimming in the pool, and he is a fish!!
Which characteristic does Javier have that a fish ALSO has?

Can you tell what the following metaphor means?
Jeannie is a couch potato whenever she has a day off.

How about this one:
Jason is a lion before he has his morning coffee!
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________
Your ideas: __________________________________________________________________________________________

Thursday, November 16, 2023

Hello!

Since we are getting closer to Thanksgiving, you will notice that we have been concentrating heavily on our persuasive essays! I will continue to conference with students to oversee the writing process...but after that, we will move on to self-editing and peer editing. I am anxious for you all to have a solid essay before Thanksgiving, and I am hoping that each of you is working hard on this in place of the monthly writing prompts you completed in September and October!! We will review the process again, and you will receive your editing checklist in class (RW3 PM Class already received theirs). You will also receive some of your recent work, which may have some corrections or suggestions to help you in your future writing assignments! I hope to return all of them before the holiday!

Today's work will consist of:

  • Persuasive Essay Writing, including a review of our template and a conference with me as needed.
  • Sentence Structure Work to help you create effective sentences that are parallel and concise. We will include a review of subjects and verbs/predicates, which will help you determine if your sentences are complete during your self-editing process.
  • Vocabulary Activities to help you expand your knowledge! Your Personal Dictionary words, which are due on Friday, are part of this process, as well as our Greek/Latin root work, our daily morning Jumble(s), and our new synonym board.
  • Geography Study to increase our knowledge of this branch of Social Studies that includes map study as well as the location, culture, and traditions of people all over the world. Today's work will focus on various regions of the United States.
  • Comprehension Work that includes reading about Jackie Robinson as well as taking an assessment on a reading passage provided on a handout. We will also review important literary terms; it seems like forever since we last discussed what a hyperbole is:)
  • Discussions about all of the above, which helps us all to remember every skill we learn in RW3!! Enjoy the process, as always!!

Next week, we will have class on Monday, November 20 for the evening class, and Tuesday, November 21 for our morning group! Thanksgiving is on Thursday, and Friday is a day off as part of this holiday. So please enjoy your turkey as well as what will be one week off (since I won't see you until the following week!)! So ... after November 21, I won't see you again until:

Monday, November 27 for PM class
Tuesday, November 28 for AM class

Our regular skills work on this page will continue tomorrow for the morning class!! And yes, we will still meet tomorrow, Friday, November 17 and Monday, November 20! So please be sure to bring your Personal Dictionary words into class. If you can think of a synonym for any word you bring in, that would be a wonderful bonus for us all!

Thanks, as always, for being such a great class!!

Your Jumble: (                                                                                           )

Each night at about 5:30 PM, everyone would sit down at the dining room table to enjoy a delicious meal while participating in wonderful conversations with all who joined them.
