Directions: Let's review some of the skills we worked on last week to be sure we are all on the right track!
(Did you happen to catch that last idiom?) 

1. The meaning of the Latin root aqua- is _____________________________________________.

2. Armando went on a TV game show and won $1,000 dollars answering questions. The TV host asked him if he would like to try for $5,000 next; however, if Armando continued and got the following question wrong, he would lose everything. Armando told the host, "A bird in hand is worth two in the bush." Did Armando try for the $5,000? _____________

3. (Its, It's) December already; the year is flying by! (There, Their, They're) are so many things I want to do before 2024 comes in, but I'm quite happy with all the progress! (Your, You're) not going to believe all that you have accomplished so far!!

4." What a beautiful baby! She is a little lamb!" This sentence contains an example of a (simile, metaphor).

5. I will see you in class. The words in class make up a (clause, prepositional phrase).

6. Tam was so angry he couldn't see straight. This is an example of (personification, hyperbole).

7. Our car climbed the hill lazily, almost as though it were pausing to look at the beautiful scenery around us. This is an example of (personification, a rhetorical question).

8. Why is there so much traffic every single morning?! This is an example of (personification, a rhetorical question).
9. He is as happy as a lark when he finishes all his chores. This is an example of a (simile, metaphor).

10. Turn to page five. In this sentence, what is the subject? _________________________________

11. I decided to watch a movie while I was waiting for my sister to arrive.  The point of view shown is (first person, second person, third person).

12. A synonym is a word that has the same meaning as another word.                (True     False)

13. Demonstrate and present are synonyms.                                                          (True      False)

14. Which of the following is correct?               a apple          an apple

15. Try this jumble!!! The (heemt) of a story could be never give up! _______________________________

Part Two.
Prepositional Phrase Practice!!

(By the way, which literary term is used in the title above?)

Directions: Please identify and circle the prepositional phrase(s) in each sentence below. The number in parenthesis after each sentence indicates how many phrases you can expect to find!

1. Jess has been practicing his basketball techniques at the court on Main Street. (2)

2. When the clock strikes midnight, Melissa's job finishes, and she goes home to her family. (1)

3. At the airport, Kenny looked for his friends who were going to California with him. (4)

4. I cannot believe how long it has been since I have seen my friend from St. Kitts. (1)

Directions II: Next, add a prepositional phrase to each sentence on the lines provided. The first one has been completed for you!

1. The man _____________________________________________ will be fixing the photocopier today.
Example: The man from the printing company will be fixing the photocopier today.

2. All the students who have lived ____________________________________ will share foods that are popular in their culture.

3. Do you know Jim, the director ____________________________________________?

4. I am thinking of visiting Hawaii ______________________________________ because friends have told me that's when the weather is at its best!

5. Pass the papers to the students _______________________________________________________________.


Directions III: This time, I will give you a complete sentence, and you will rewrite the entire sentence and add a prepositional phrase to it. It can be placed anywhere you would like to add more information.

1. Lots of people enjoy going on ski trips!
Example: Lots of people in Massachusetts enjoy going on ski trips in the winter! 

Notice that I added two prepositional phrases to this sentence! The first one gives us more information about where the people we are speaking about are from; the second one tells us when they like to go on trips!
Words and phrases that tell where or when something happens are adverbs or adverb phrases! We will be talking about a few other ways an adverb is used, as well!

The boys played a great game of basketball!
