Hello Writing Workshop Students!
Since today is a fun holiday, we will be doing some activities involving the valentine and its origin. 1. We will first use Newsela.com to read a story on the valentine capital of the world and complete several activities. One will include new vocabulary words that will be introduced prior to reading the story, and another will talk about our latest Greek root and how it applies to words we will be reading today! We will also complete a short quiz following our reading to ensure we understood the main points of the article. 2. Next, we will read a short article that talks about the beginning days and theories of how Valentine's Day came to be. Will you agree with any of these theories? We will set up our Writer's Notebooks and copy a few details or quotes down; we will then write our own opinions or ideas that corresponds to each one. 3. We will end our Valentine activities with a quick crossword puzzle for your enjoyment. I encourage you to do crossword puzzles whenever possible because they are a wonderful way to learn more vocabulary, to brush up on your spelling, and to reinforce words you already know! After this section of class is complete, we will check homework assignments and complete step two of our expository essay! In addition, we may complete another analogy and even write one more expository piece, if time permits! I look forward to seeing you all in class on Thursday!! Thank you for being so attentive during these first few weeks of class as we all adjust to each other as well as a new curriculum!!
