Here is a Map of the Contiguous United States? What is the first thing you should look at to understand what is being measured?

Elements on a map

Monday:
1.)Name the 5 elements that are shown on the the map?
- Title - Compass Map - Scale - Legend - Inset Map
2.) What does the title tell you about the map?
-The title give clues to it's topic
- Title identifies the maps main topic

Tuesday:
1,) How many states are part of the contiguous United states? There are 48 contiguous states in the United states. - Which states are not part of the contiguous map? There are only 2, Alaska and Hawaii
2.) Name the cardinal and intermediate directions shown on the Compass Rose
- Cardinal directions are North, East, South, East
- Intermediate Directions are Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, South west

Wednesday:
1.) What is another name for a Legend? Map key
* What kinds of things are shown on a Legend?
- State Border, International Border, State Capital, National Capital
2.) Name two countries that border the United States ?
- South America, and Canada

Thursday:
1.) Why is the inset map of North America included?
- Inset maps are used to show the overview of an area.
2.) Use the scale and a ruler to find the approximate distance from Denver to Lincoln?(nearest 1/4 inch) 300miles

Friday:
1.) Approximate distance from Raleigh to Little Rock then to Austin? 675 miles
2.) Approximate distance from the Nations capital to the capital of Florida? 1575 miles

Challenge: Write a question about the distance between capitals, answers included....

** Measure the approximate distance between Augusta to Helena and then to Sacramento.... 975 miles (3.25 inches)
** What is the approximate distance from Austin to Saint Paul , then to Phoenix and then Tallahassee. 2700 miles
